Jordan Zjawiony, Professor at the University of Mississippi, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in chemistry and pharmacognosy.
Dr. Zjawiony’s interest in science developed in high school under a wonderful chemistry teacher. He was fascinated with the chemistry of life and everything that happened with our bodies. He wanted to know what connected us to nature and looked to universities all over the world into understanding the very complex biochemical process of plants and animals. Dr. Zjawiony followed this burgeoning love and thirst for answers at the Technical University of Lodz, earning a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in chemistry and technology. He later received a PhD in organic chemistry at the institution in 1974. After teaching and working in research for a few years in his native Poland, Dr. Zjawiony relocated to the United States.
Since 2019, Dr. Zjawiony has enjoyed the fruits of his career as a professor emeritus of the University of Mississippi. He first joined the institution in the 1980s, and in his career has worked with the National Institutes of Health, the Fogarty International Collaboration Program with International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups and myriad other organizations and committees. The highlight of Dr. Zjawiony’s career was the first years he spent at the University of Mississippi. He was looking for an institution that was deep into natural product research and found it in Mississippi. He began specializing in natural products and very proud to have a publication with Robert J. Lefkowitz, which published a few years before he won the Nobel Prize.
