Dr. Mulatu Lemma, Mathematics Professor at Savannah State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who as Top Decorated Mathematical Researcher.

A native of Ethiopia, Dr. Lemma has been in the field of teaching and engagement in research activities for 25 years, working in his current position as a Mathematics Professor with Savannah State University for 27 years. He wanted to be a teacher since he was in elementary school and started teaching mathematics at SSU while earning his Ph.D. in pure mathematics at Kent State University.

Implementing innovative research strategies, Dr. Lemma is known in the Mathematics community for his research activities. His excellent professional contributions in research are well known to the mathematics community, his institution and the world. In 2011, he introduced the Mulatu numbers, named after him, an integral sequence of numbers with distinct mathematical properties and patterns comparable to the Fibonacci and Lucas series. He worked for over three years investigating the numbers and produced more than 13 theorems. Up-to-date, he published 132 articles on peer higher level reviewed journals of which 37 are with students. With his students being involved in the research, they were able to present their findings at regional and national conferences.

He was greatly encouraged and supported in his research activities by Drs. Sametria McFall, Sudesh Mujumdar, Mohammed Mustafa, Jonathan Lambright, Chellu Chetty, Agegnehu Atena, Tilahun Muche and Kai Shen.

Due to his wealth of expertise in his field, Dr. Lemma has been recognized with myriad awards and honors, a Distinguished Professor through Savannah State University in 2010. In 2012, he was presented with the University System of Georgia Board of Regents’ Teaching Excellence Award for Faculty in Regional and State Universities. In 2013, he was recognized as the Georgia Professor of the Year. He became one of the most awarded professors in the state of Georgia in 2015. More recently, he won the White House Presidential Award in mentoring, in 2020.

Dr. Lemma said that this big honor is not only for him but it is also an honor for his great institution, Savannah State University, and the home of the Tigers.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Lemma intends to continue parlaying his love of mathematical research to his students at Savannah State University.
