John Nazarian, Mathematics Professor and President Emeritus of Rhode Island College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in mathematics education and educational administration.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Nazarian attended Rhode Island College (RIC), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 1954. He accepted a position as an instructor of mathematics at the institution, simultaneously continuing his academic pursuits at Brown University, and graduated with a Master of Arts in 1956. In 1958, he rose to the rank of an assistant professor at RIC, which he held for nine years, earning an additional Master of Arts from the University of Illinois in 1961 and a PhD from New York University in 1967. Dr. Nazarian became an associate professor at RIC, and in 1970 he assumed the post of the associate dean of arts and sciences. In 1971, he was designated as a full professor, and from 1971 to 1977, he served as the special assistant to the president of RIC.
Dr. Nazarian continued to garner leadership experience at RIC as the vice president of administration and finance in 1981, the vice president of administrative services in 1977 and the acting president from 1984 to 1986. In 1990, he accepted a position as the president of the institution, continuing to excel in both his professorial and administrative roles until his retirement in 2008. In addition to his primary career, Dr. Nazarian also dedicated his expertise as the chairman of the Arabic Educational Foundation from 1966 to 1972 and as the chairman of the Sargent Rehabilitation Center from 1983 to 1986. He has also been an active member of the Diocese of Newton, serving on the diocesan pastoral council of West Newton for four years, and acting as the chairman of the diocesan finance council since 1996.
In recognition of his career achievements, Dr. Nazarian has had multiple buildings and awards named in his honor. He is the eponym of both The John Nazarian Alumni of the Year Award and The Dr. Nazarian and Dr. Penfield Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as The John Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts, which was dedicated to him in 2000. He was inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame in 2003, and as a further testament to his success, experience and stature, he has been featured in the 13th edition of Who’s Who in the World, as well as multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who in the East.
