With an impressive professional history dating back nearly five decades, one thing has remained a constant in Ms. Brewer’s career: her passion. Knowing at an early age that she wanted to be a teacher because she enjoyed school, she first pursued the field at Coppin State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1973. She continued her academic pursuits at the institution to receive an MEd in correctional education in 1974 and an MEd in special education in 1981. As a testament to her commitment to education, Ms. Brewer has also engaged with postgraduate coursework at the Community College of Baltimore and Coppin State University. She holds certifications in elementary and special education.
Early in her career, Ms. Brewer worked as a teacher with Baltimore County Adult Education and then transitioned to a position as a coordinator of the Just Say No to Drugs Program. When she was in the classroom as a schoolteacher in the public school system, the schools entrusted her with children that had problems. She enjoyed working with those children because she saw progress with them from September to June. She worked with kids that didn’t have problems as well. Throughout the 2000s, Ms. Brewer has dedicated herself to a number of positions in coordinating and supervisory. These include managing summer schools with the Baltimore City Public Schools, coordinating the Discipline Center, serving as an academy coach and coordinating the mathematics elementary laboratory. From 2007 to 2012, Ms. Brewer leveraged her skills and expertise as the teacher supervisor for the Department of Juvenile Services with the Charles H. Hickey, Jr. School. Since 2012, she has served as a teacher supervisor for the Charles H. Hickey, Jr. School.
Ms. Brewer can look back at her career and feel incredibly accomplished due to knowing the value of her work has lead to the successful futures of so many young people.
