Title: (Retired) College Librarian, Archivist, Photographer
Location: Lakeland, Florida, United States
Mary Flekke, Retired College Librarian, Archivist and Photographer, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in instructional services and librarianship.
Ms. Flekke started her career preparation at Saint Cloud State University in Minnesota, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1980, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Science in library science in 1982. She started working in instructional library services at the Roux Library at Florida Southern College (FSC) in 1982, and her first major project was establishing and developing the college’s archives. Upon Ms. Flekke’s arrival, FSC only had a closet to store the documents. Seeing the inadequacy of this, she created a plan and submitted it to the president of the board of trustees, who used it to establish a brand new building to house the archives. She continued her work for FSC until her retirement in 2011, and she will never forget how much it meant to her each and every time a student thanked her for her work at the institution.
In addition to her professional endeavors, Ms. Flekke was an active advocate for librarian’s benefits, rights, and status while at FSC—she was always willing to stick her neck out for the betterment of the lives of her coworkers. She has worked on several creative works, including writing the fourth edition of “Telling Our Stories, Oral and Family History” in 1999, co-authoring “Lakeland” with Randall M. MacDonald in 2005, co-authoring “Cypress Gardens” in 2006 with both Sarah E. MacDonald and Mr. MacDonald, and co-authoring “100 Years of Grace, The History of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church” with B.P. Reinsch and Elizabeth Eicher. She has been an active member of her religious community, and as a testament to her success and stature, Ms. Flekke has been featured in the 23rd and 24th editions of Who’s Who of American Women.
