Dorothy Thomas, English Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education.

Dr. Thomas began her higher education at Bennett College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English and French in 1963, and started as a French and English teacher at Irwin Avenue Junior High School, where she remained until 1965. She spent a year as an English teacher at Booker T. Washington High School, transitioning to a position at Huntington High School in Newport News, Virginia, where she worked until 1971. Dr. Thomas accepted a position at Warwick High School, continuing her education at Hampton University and earning a Master of Arts in French in 1973. In 1988, she continued her career as a staff development specialist and instructor for Newport News Public Schools, and continued her academic pursuits at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 1991, Dr. Thomas became an assistant professor of English at Hampton University, where she worked until 2001 and served in various administrative roles, including acting as the secretary of the faculty, the chair of the hospitality committee, and as an assessment facilitator for the department of English.

In 1997, Dr. Thomas earned a PhD in rhetoric and linguistics from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and in 2001, she accepted a position as an adjunct professor of English at Thomas Nelson Community College. In addition to her work as a professor, she served as an executive assistant to William R. Harvey, president of Hampton University, and acted as a consultant to Newport News Public Schools. Dr. Thomas is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, and is a former member of the Fellow Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Virginia Association of Teachers of English and the National Council of Teachers of English. In 2014, she retired as an educator, and in the coming years plans to attend weekly Bible study, play tennis, travel and spend time with her grandchildren. As a testament to her success and experience, Dr. Thomas has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who in America.
