Dr. John C. Wilcox, Spanish Literature Educator at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Spanish and English language.
Dr. Wilcox became involved in his profession because while he was in school in England he had a superb English teacher, J. A. Prichard and Spanish teacher, E. G. James. They both inspired him to keep studying. Dr. Wilcox earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and English literature from Bristol University in England in 1955. He then went to the United States and earned a PhD in Spanish and English literature from the University of Texas in 1976. During that time, he was also a lecturer for Queens College from 1970 to 1976. Upon completion of his degree, Dr. Wilcox became a Charles Phelps Taft postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cincinnati from 1977 to 1979.
The highlight of Dr. Wilcox’s career was helping to develop a program for undergraduates to study abroad. He began his professional career at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and remained there throughout his career. He started in 1979 as an assistant professor of Spanish working his way through the rankings to professor of Spanish and professor emeritus of Spanish in 2011. During his tenure, Dr. Wilcox also held the position of director of the Education Abroad Program for the Universities of California and Universities of Illinois in two-year stints, from 1986 to 1988, 1994 to 1996, 2004 to 2006 and 2009 to 2011. While at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he also held the position of interim head and head of the Spanish Department from 1992 to 1994 and 2000 to 2004. Dr. Wilcox has been retired since 2011, and has written a few articles and given a few lectures, but not anywhere near the amount he used to prior to retirement. He continues to go the University of Illinois basketball and football games to support the teams. As a testament to his success, Dr. Wilcox has been listed in the 24th edition of Who’s Who in the Midwest.
