Valerie Jon Hoffman, Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Illinois, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of cultural studies.
Interested in studying other cultures since she was a young girl, Dr. Hoffman has been serving as a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 2011. She began her time with the institution as a visiting lecturer from 1983 to 1986, before achieving the role of an assistant professor from 1986 to 1994, an associate professor from 1994 to 2011, and ultimately the head of the department of religion from 2015 to 2019. From 2011 to 2015, she also worked as the director of the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In that position, she secured grants for the center that funded new faculty positions, courses, scholarships, workshops and lectures. Even though she has experienced many highlights throughout her career, she is especially proud of the research that led to the publication of her first book, “Sufism, Mystics and Saints in Modern Egypt,” which was published by the University of South Carolina Press in 1995.
Dr. Hoffman earned a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania before attending American University in the Arab Republic of Egypt to complete postgraduate coursework. Strengthening her interest in Islamic culture, Dr. Hoffman pursed Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Chicago, graduating with a Master of Arts in 1979 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1986. She is the author of “The Essentials of Ibadi Islam” and over 70 articles in journals and books. A member of the Association for Middle East Women’s Studies, Dr. Hoffman has received a Carnegie Scholar Award, two Fulbright Research Fellowships, an Arnold O. Beckman Award, a William and Flora Hewlett Award, and a National Endowment of the Humanities Fellowship, among other accolades and honors.
