Arthur Mark, Professor Emeritus of Teacher Education at East Stroudsburg University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in early childhood education.
Originally interested in a career in theater, Dr. Mark became involved in teaching after the passing of his father. He discovered that he had a talent for teaching and pursued an education at the University of Massachusetts at Boston, earning a Bachelor of Science in education in 1952. Dr. Mark continued his academic pursuits, completing additional coursework at the Columbia University Teachers College, obtaining a Master of Arts in 1956 and an EdD in 1973. He is certified in early childhood education, elementary education, as a supervisor of speech and drama programs for grades K through 12, and as a director and administrator for grades K through nine. Notably, Dr. Mark served in the United States Army Military Government from 1948 to 1954, when he received an honorable discharge.
As the founder, vice president and past president of the Business and Industry for Arts in Education, Dr. Mark entered the industry as a director of gifted and talented programs for grades four through nine at the Greenwich, Connecticut Elementary and Junior High Schools from 1953 to 1969. He then transitioned to a position as the headmaster and director of the Long Ridge School, where he served from 1969 to 1971, before he started as a professor at East Stroudsburg University. Currently, Dr. Mark holds the title of professor emeritus. He recalls being elected to the Royal Society of Arts in 1989 as a highlight of his career, and he is the founder of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Arts in the Education Network. As a testament to his success in the field, he has been featured in the fourth edition of Who’s Who in American Education.
