Nellie Louise Derise, Nutritionist, Educator, Researcher at University Southwestern Louisiana, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of home economics education.
Always curious to learn new things, Dr. Derise went to a rural high school that encouraged girls to go into home economics, but she took physics and chemistry instead. Although she decided on the field in her teaching, her education centered on science and she received several fellowships and scholarships to help her along. Her father, who never had the opportunity to finish his schooling, pushed education and was her greatest inspiration to keep trying no matter what.
Dr. Derise pursued a college education at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1962. She continued on to the University of Alabama to obtain her Master of Science in 1964 and to the Virginia Polytechnic Institute to get her Doctor of Philosophy in 1973. During her studies, she met the head of the home economics department and a biology professor who would join the list of influences in her life.
Now retired, Dr. Derise began her career as a graduate assistant at the University of Alabama from 1962 to 1964. She then became an assistant professor at the University of Southwestern Louisiana from 1964 to 1968, before working as an assistant professor at Iowa State University until 1970. Returning to the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Dr. Derise served as an associate professor before moving up to a full professor position in 1981. Retiring in 1994, she was actively involved with the American Home Economics Association, the American Dietetic Association, the U.S. Metric Association, the Society for Nutrition Education, and the Louisiana Home Economics Association, among other organizations.
Proud of every accomplishment in her career, Dr. Derise has been awarded the Citizen of the Month title by AARP in April of 1999, recognized as a Jeanerette Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 2015, and has received a Certificate of Merit for Service to the Community from the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of The U.S.A. in 2008. She has contributed many articles to professional journals and served with the Jeanerette Museum Board. To those wishing to enter the field, Dr.Derise would like them to know that there will always be an opening someplace and that they will know that it is meant for them.
