Thomas E. Oxman, Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry & of Community and Family Medicine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of psychiatry.
Dr. Oxman always liked people and his talent for listening drew him into the field of psychiatry, while his father being a doctor led him to the field of medicine. After earning a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, with a distinction in philosophy, from Dartmouth College, he entered the field as an intern at the Mount Zion Medical Center in San Fransisco, California in 1976. He spent 1979 to 1987 in the fulfilling the positions of a resident in psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School, a fellow in psychiatry/liaison, an assistant professor of psychiatry and family medicine at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, and as an assistant professor at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College. In the years following, Dr. Oxman excelled as an associate professor of psychiatry and family and community medicine at Dartmouth Medical School before progressing to a professor with tenure. Before his retirement in 2007, he received an honorary Master of Arts degree and currently holds the title of a professor emeritus.
A diplomate in psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry for the American Board Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Oxman was the editor of the International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine from 1996 to 2000 and for the online abstract service of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry. He has contributed over 100 articles to professional journals and is a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Having received a number of awards for his accomplishments, he is the recipient of a Merrell Resident Research Award, a Joffee Research Fund Award, a University of Cincinnati Research Council Award, and has been honored as one of the Best Doctors in America from 2001 to 2008. In additional recognition of his achievements, Dr. Oxman has been featured in the fourth edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America and multiple editions of Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who’s Who in the World.
