Muriel Zimmerman, Retired Dean and Professor Emeritus at Chaffey College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of higher education and educational administration.
Ms. Zimmerman started her higher education at Chaffey College, earning an Associate of Arts in 1971. She continued her studies at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in 1974, and a Master of Science in 1977. In 1974, she started as a faculty member at Chaffey College, and in 1981 she rose to the rank of division chairman of life sciences. After completing advanced coursework in statistics and computer programming at the University of California, Riverside, Ms. Zimmerman took on an additional role as the division chairman of physical education at Chaffey College in 1985. She finished her education at Cal Poly Pomona, completing advanced coursework in mycology and anaerobic bacteriology, and became certified in hazardous materials management at the University of California, Davis, in 1993.
For her presentation on her work “The Biological Adaptiveness of Lying,” Ms. Zimmerman was named Faculty Speaker of the Year at Chaffey College, and in 1993, she started as the coordinator of the environmental hazardous materials technology program. In 1996, she became the dean of physical education, life sciences, and health sciences at Chaffey, and in 2004, she became a professor emeritus. During her tenure, Ms. Zimmerman spearheaded new curriculum in sociobiology, metabolism, nutrition, and horticulture, while maintaining support curriculum for Allied Health programs. She started the Annual Chaffey College Science Fair, and under her leadership as dean, the faculty, students, and programs grew considerably, ranging from 10% to 50% increases. She is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society of Microbiology, and has been recognized for her work as a leader and educator with myriad awards, including being named Alumni of the Year by Chaffey College in 2010.
