Ms. Dyer-Raffler first pursued an education with the University of North Carolina, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1969. She then joined the University of Arizona, completing a Master of Education in secondary education in 1974. She continued her studies with the school, earning a Master of Education in special education in 1976. She is certified in special education, learning disabilities, emotional handicaps, and art education.
Ms. Dyer-Raffler was inspired to pursue a career in the field by her father, who enjoyed his career and found it fulfilling. Her older brother also encouraged her, and he was an academic wunderkind whom she looked up to. Throughout her career, she has been recognized for her contributions. She has received awards and accolades for her contributions. She is a grantee of the Tucson Unified School District.
