Dr. Harris started her education at DePaul University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1957. Upon graduation, she became a teacher at Gary Public Schools in Gary, Indiana, where she went on to work as an educator for over 30 years, until 1993. In 1975, Dr. Harris earned a Master of Arts from Governors State University, and in 1985, she earned an MPS from Loyola University. Finally, she studied at the International Bible Institute and Seminary, earning a Doctor of Ministry in 1985. Dr. Harris started God First Church and Ministries in 1978, and continues to act as founder and chief executive officer to this day. She has opened chapters of her ministry in Tennessee, Illinois, New York, and Georgia, and plans to open a women’s center in the center of Chicago. The center will offer educational services, financial literacy information, and employment support services.
Influenced by her mother, who was a teacher, Dr. Harris knew from a young age that she wanted to work as an educator and help others improve their lives. Since she was appointed by the mayor in 1999, she has served as the commissioner of the City of Chicago Public Housing. She oversees the Gary Educators for Christ, and worked as the organizer of Signatures of Prolific Women. She is a member of the National Council of Negro Women, and was a member of the National Society of Fundraising Executives. She advises others to have faith, believe in their visions, and make their visions understandable to others. As a testament to her stature, experience, and service as an educator and religious leader, Dr. Harris has been included in the sixth edition of Who’s Who in American Education, as well as multiple editions of Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who’s Who in America.
