Title: Psychiatrist

Location: Brookline, Massachusettes, United States

Axel Hoffer, Psychiatrist at a Private Practice, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy.

Dr. Hoffer decided to pursue his professional field after taking a class on psychology that was given by psychoanalyst, Dr. John Speigel. Dr. Speigel looked around the room and said, “Notice how many people have something in their mouth,” there were a few people with objects in their mouth, and he suggested that was the Freud oral phase. Dr. Hoffer thought that was fascinating, as he had not heard of it before and that was why he began reading Freud when he was a junior in college. Being that Dr. Hoffer knew German, he was able to read Freud in its original version. He also had a distant cousin who was a famous psychoanalyst in England, Willie Hoffer. Dr. Hoffer started his education in Germany taking classes at the University of Munich from 1955 to 1956. He then moved on to Harvard University, where he received a BA, magna cum laude, in 1957 and a MD, cum laude, in 1961.

Dr. Hoffer’s career has taken on multiple roles over the course of 57 years at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center. He began as a resident in psychiatry in 1962, moving onto a fellow in child psychiatry in 1964, and then to an assistant clinical director, a position he held from 1968 until 1975. From there, he became an associate director in 1975 and then landing as the director of in-patient services in 1977, a position he stills holds to this day. Dr. Hoffer is also a psychiatrist at a private practice in Boston, where he has worked since 1975. As a testament to his career, Dr. Hoffer has been inducted as member of Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society. He has also been listed in the first edition of Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare and the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in the East.
