Title: School System Administrator
Location: Uniondale, New York, United States
Vera Rebecca Johnson, School System Administrator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of education administration.
When Ms. Johnson was in the first grade she was inspired by her teacher, Karine Williams, and knew that she, too, wanted to teach. She professionally pursued her passion at the State University of New York in Buffalo where she earned a BS and an MS in 1971 as well as teaching certification and school administrator/supervisor certification with the New York Board of Education. She served as a public school teacher for grades pre-K through sixth grade in Roosevelt and Buffalo, New York, as well as in Springfield, Massachusetts, from 1966 to 1997. Additionally, she served as the executive director of the Day Care Coordinator Council in Newark, New Jersey, from 1970 to 1972, a training coordinator with the Economic Opportunity Commission in Hempstead, New York, from 1979 to 1982, and a curriculum specialist at Washington Rose Elementary School in Roosevelt, New York, from 1998 to 2008.
Though Ms. Johnson considered working as a principal or superintendent, she preferred working directly with her students and knew she would miss the children if she assumed one of those roles. She considers the greatest accomplishments of her career to have been affecting positive change in a child’s life. Ms. Johnson loves when she sees her students and they tell her all the wonderful things they are doing since leaving her classroom. As a testament to her success, Ms. Johnson received a monetary grant from the Public Broadcasting Network in 1996, was a consultant for Scholastic Publications, and holds membership with the New York State Teachers Association.
