Kathleen S. Roos, PhD, environmental engineer and scientist at the University at LaVerne, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education.
Driven by a love of science and the environment, Dr. Roos has met with success by demonstrating broad experience covering research, application and academia. She possesses an expertise in biology and environmental science that has afforded her the opportunity to work on international projects in partnership with government entities including the Department of Defense and the military. Today, she excels in her role as a professor of biology for the University at LaVerne. In this position since 2016, she came to this capacity after excelling in prior roles including director of environmental training at the Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Port Hueneme, California, environmental technical advisor for NAVFAC, director of the environmental division at the Naval Air Station Miramar, program manager for CH2M Hill, director of hazardous waste programs for McClelland Engineers, Inc., and others. Dr. Roos has also been a technical advisor to the USSR Ambassador Program and chief environmental engineer for Multinational Forces in Iraq.
In recognition of her professional excellence in her career, Dr. Roos has been the recipient of several awards, including multiple California and U.S. EPE environment awards. She earned a Tribute to Women Award from the California Women in Government and she was selected for inclusion into the Norwalk High School 2007 Wall of Honor for Lifetime Achievement in Science. She was also honored in Who’s Who of American Women. Further, Dr. Roos achieved a U.S. EPA Waste Minimization and Source Reduction Award from the NAS Miramar Recycling Program, a State of California Waste Minimization Award, a Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Natural Resources and Conservation Award and an Office of the Secretary of Defense Civilian Service Medal for Service in Iraq. When asked of her success, Dr. Roos notes that her education has played a key role in the accomplishments she has been able to achieve. She holds a PhD from Columbia Southern University, a Master of Science from Long Island University and a Bachelor of Arts from Hartwick College. As she looks to the future, Dr. Roos intends to continue in her current work while seeking new opportunities to impact her industry. She also plans to spend time in her volunteer work, which currently includes projects with the National Parks Service, the NOAA Channel Islands Marine Sanctuary and the Ventura College Orchestra.
