Title: School Librarian, Elementary School Educator (Retired)
Location: Albertville, Alabama, United States
Jane Sheets, retired school librarian and elementary school educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in elementary education.
When reflecting on a successful career in academia the one thing that Mrs. Sheets knows to be true is this: you don’t need to be the loudest person in the room to make an impact. Over the course of more than four decades, she demonstrated a reserved disposition and a strong integrity in her work. She was flexible, willing to do her share and known as someone who could be relied on to give an extra helping hand. Retired since 1991, Mrs. Sheets concluded her career as an elementary librarian at Marshall County Board of Education in Guntersville, Alabama. She held this role for 15 years, having previously excelled as a teacher of reading for the school for 14 years. When asked of her accomplishments as a teacher, Mrs. Sheets attributes her success to her own love of reading. She cannot remember a time that she wasn’t constantly reading as a child. In fact, she notes that she has been reading since she was three years old.
Mrs. Sheets prepared for a career in education by first achieving her own academic goals. She holds a Master of Education from Auburn University, a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alabama and an Associate of Science from Snead Junior College. She is a certified teacher and school librarian in the state of Alabama. Committed to her professional development, Mrs. Sheets has continued in her higher education throughout her lifetime. She has taken graduate coursework at the Writer’s Digest School and the Institute of Children’s literature. She has also been a student at the National Radio Institute. Considered an expert in her field, Mrs. Sheets succeeded from the beginning of her career in early roles such as a children’s librarian for the Cleveland Public Library and private reading tutor.
What Mrs. Sheets has learned over the course of her career that has most benefited her in her professional growth is that children have such love and great compassion. It has benefited her because it helped her to be forgiving and have patience because children are so innocent and loving. To give the children the best possible education, Mrs. Sheets remained at the top of her field through her affiliations with the National Education Association and the Alabama Education Association. Today, she is a member of the Alabama Retired Teachers Association, the Marshall County Retired Teachers Association and the American Association of Retired Persons. In the years to come, Mrs. Sheets intends to indulge herself in passion projects in education while enjoying her retirement further.
