Title: Mathematician, Environmental Scientist, Educator, Consultant
Location: Pullman, Washington, United States
Charles Blanchard Millham, mathematician, environmental scientist, educator and consultant has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education.
“As an educator, it is extremely important to put a lot of time into the preparation so that you are able to have a good handle on the material before going into the classroom,” says Dr. Millham, who met with success as an educator for more than 40 years before retiring in 2001. In addition to his commitment to always being prepared, he found success in his career by having a good sense of humor, which made him more personable to his students. Dr. Millham taught at Washington State University for many years, beginning as an assistant professor in 1966 and advancing through to a full-time professor by 1974. While at the university, he spent two terms as acting chair of computer science and one term as chair of the environmental science and regional planning. Additionally, he was a part of numerous campus-wide and departmental committees and advised more than 50 Master of Science students and four PhD dissertation students. In recognition of his professional excellence in his career, Dr. Millham was the recipient of a citation award from the Royal Science Society and a Fulbright grant from the University of Jordan. The highlight of his career was being honored with an endowed scholarship in his name, The Charles Chuck Millham Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics at Washington State University.
Dr. Millham was inspired to enter his profession because of his own experience in education. His high school had a very poor curriculum in mathematics and science so when he reached the higher education level, he did not initially succeed in his coursework. However, the challenges posed in these subjects were the driving force behind Dr. Millham’s desire to succeed. Eventually, Dr. Millham triumphed over his own expectations and discovered he had a natural ability for certain subject areas and became eager to learn more. At the core of Dr. Millham’s success in his career is his education. A graduate of the Iowa State University, he holds a PhD in economics, a Master of Science in mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts in foreign trade.
Committed to his professional development, Dr. Millham has remained at the top of his field through his memberships with the Association for Computing Machinery, the American Economic Association, the Operations Research Society, the Mathematics Programming Society, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. In addition, Dr. Millham is known for his work as a founding member and past president of the Association of Research Professors in Washington. Dr. Millham shares his expertise with his industry through written works and presentations at national conferences. Notably, he co-authored “Mathematics and Statistics for Economists.” Currently, he is working on another book tentatively titled, “A River Boyhood and its Academic Aftermath.” In his free time, Dr. Millham enjoys camping, repairing antique outboard motors and writing. He intends to work hard in the future within his field as a consultant and look for new opportunities to make an impact in the years to come.
