Yvonne Samuels, Retired Special Education Educator and Owner of Samuel’s Funeral Home, LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in special education.
Ms. Samuels became involved in her profession because when she was in school she loved poetry and liked to write. When she got to high school she had a teacher, Ms. Clay, in the ninth grade who taught English and made it so enticing. In her own academic pursuits, she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Benedict College and an MEd from South Carolina State University. Not long after, Ms. Samuels began her career by teaching English in the Greeleyville School System. She continued at the Manning School Systems as a teacher of special education. In addition, Ms. Samuels has worked in private practice as a speech instructor, and as a director of Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church. From 1993 to 1999, Mr. Samuels served as a state judge for Clemson University.
In recognition of her work, Ms. Samuels has received more than 21 awards and in 1999 was named Woman of the Year over all youth activities. She has worked closely with the such organizations as National Female Executives, Alpha Kappa Alpha and the Clarendon Fine Arts Commission. She put her writing talent to work co-authoring the PRIDE Handbook in 1997 and serving as an officer for Operation Common Sense with Clemson University. In her career, Ms. Samuels’ was most proud of the concert choirs she sang and lead. Music ran on her mother’s side of the family. In high school, she won first place when she sang “Ave Maria” for a music festival competition in Columbia. She also won a state talent show and won for the county and state which awarded her a college scholarship. At the state teacher’s association at Columbia she recited the Lord’s Prayer while Senator Edward Kennedy was a speaker for the convention at the Colosseum.
