Martin J. Gannon, PhD, professor emeritus for the Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland at College Park, the College of Business Administration and Cal State San Marcos, and Three-time Fulbright Professor, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in cross-cultural management and business strategy.
Highly respected and regarded by former colleagues and students, Dr. Gannon celebrates a career in academia and research that spanned more than six decades. He concluded his tenure as a professor and management director for the Center for Knowledge, Management and Global Business at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. Prior to this, Dr. Gannon spent many decades with the university in prominent roles including chairperson for faculty management and organization, acting associate dean for academic affairs, professor of management, and lecturer on management and organizational behavior. His noteworthy achievements in his career include his work as the founding director of the College Park Scholars Program in Business, Society and the Economy and earning the distinction of Fulbright professor three times for his work in Germany with the University of Tubingen and the University of Kassel, as well as his impact as a visiting professor at Thammasat University in Thailand.
Dr. Gannon’s research in his field showcases his expertise in cross-cultural management and business strategy. In his career, he has authored many publications on these subjects, including two editions of “Management, An Integrated Framework,” “Organizational Behavior,” “Management, Managing for Results,” “Cultural Metaphors, Readings, Research Translations, and Commentary,” and “Working Across Cultures, Applications and Exercises.” Dr. Gannon is also a co-author of “Ethical Dimensions of International Management,” “Strategic Management Skills,” “The Dynamics of Competitive Strategy,” “Managing Without Traditional Methods,” “International Innovations in Human Resource Management” and “Understanding Global Cultures, Metaphorical Journeys Through 23 Countries, 2d edition.” Dr. Gannon has served as the editor of “Handbook of Cross-Cultural Management,” co-editor of “Readings in Management,” member of the editorial revised board for the “Journal of Business Research,” and member of the editorial revised board for the “Journal of International Business Education.”
The factors or attributes that Dr. Gannon feel have played a role in his success is his education because it taught him discipline on what he could overcome. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and philosophy from the University of Scranton in 1961, a postgraduate degree in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1963, and a PhD in industrial relations and management from Columbia University in 1969. As he looks to the future, Dr. Gannon intends to continue enjoying his well-deserved retirement while continuing to write on his favorite topics.
