Title: Music Educator
Location: Muskogee, Oklahoma, United States

Nancy Shelton, Music Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music.

Ms. Shelton became involved in her profession because when she was in eighth grade she heard her piano teacher in a recital and she wanted to study with him. Upon receiving a scholarship, she went straight into music. By that time, she had taught strings and choir and then realized she wanted to go to seminary and play the piano. Going into the seminary allowed her to combine her passion for music and passion for her faith together. Ms. Shelton first earned a Bachelor of Music Education at Oklahoma Baptist University in 1970. She graduated with a Master of Music in church music and an MRE from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1974.

Another instance that attracted Ms. Shelton to her profession is that when she was five years old her Sunday school teacher saw interest in the piano and told her mother that she might want to try piano lessons on her. Two years later she began lessons and her piano teacher encouraged her to play hymns in church. One of her earliest positions was working as a choral/string teacher at Muskogee Public Schools in 1970. She then became a teaching fellow of piano at Southwestern Seminary in 1973. Since 1976, Ms. Shelton has also provided her teaching services as a private piano teacher. From 1976 until 2018, she served as the organist of the First Baptist Church. From 1982 until her retirement in 2018, she also served as the church’s music assistant.

The highlight of Ms. Shelton’s career has been being named as Teacher of the Year in 2009 by the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association. She also received recognition with the Oklahoma University profile in Excellence in 2011 and in 2012 with the OMTA Honorary State Membership. In her career, she maintained professional affiliation with the Oklahoma Music Teachers National Association, the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association and the National Guild of Piano Teachers. In her spare time, she enjoys scrapbooking and ceramics.
