John David Orme has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in political science.

Dr. Orme’s view of the world is one of ongoing curiosity of the evolving and changing nature of society. In his career as a political science educator, he has demonstrated a deep understanding and interest in human nature, which has led him to achieve much success as a leader and scholar. In total, he has amassed 37 years of experience, much of which he has committed to Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA. Today, he is distinguished as a James Edward Oglethorpe Professor, an honor that was bestowed onto him in 2015. Previously, he taught at the professor level for 20 years after having already worked for the university as an assistant professor and associate professor for 12 years. In recognition of his professional excellence in his career, Dr. Orme was the recipient of a Lu Thomason Garrett Award for Meritorious Teaching from Oglethorpe University, a Donald Agnew Award for Distinguished Service from the Oglethorpe Student Association and an Oglethorpe University Core Teaching Award.

In addition to his work as an educator, Dr. Orme is highly regarded as an author. His most recent book is “Human Nature and the Causes of War,” which he published in 2018. His noteworthy pieces of work include “The Paradox of Peace,” “Political Instability and American Foreign Policy,” and “Deterrence, Reputation and Cold War Cycles.” Dr. Orme has also contributed articles to “International Security,” “Security Studies,” “Political Science Quarterly,” and “Washington Quarterly.” Driven by a love of learning, Dr. Orme prepared for his career by first pursuing his own academic goals. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in history and general social science from the University of Oregon in 1974, a Master of Arts in government from Harvard University in 1977 and a PhD in government from Harvard University in 1982. Over the years, he has remained at the top of his field through his experience and industry affiliations. He is a member of the American Political Science Association, Phi Beta Kappa and the International Studies Association. Looking ahead, Dr. Orme intends to continue in his writing work while pursuing new opportunities in his field.
