George Benson, PhD, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education.

A third generation educator with a passion for leadership and strategic planning, Dr. Benson has met with tremendous success in his career because of his professionalism, passion, vision and integrity.  Currently teaching at the College of Charleston, he previously served as its president for nearly eight years, leaving an incredible legacy.  In addition, Dr. Benson impacted the business community nationally thru his 23 years of service to the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, including three years as a national judge, two years as Chairman of the Board of Overseers for the Baldrige Program, and seven years as the Chairman of the Foundation for the Baldrige Award.

To prepare for a career in education, Dr. Benson first focused on his own academic achievements.  After earning a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Bucknell University, he studied operations research at New York University and obtained a PhD in decision sciences from the University of Florida.  The noteworthy positions in his career have included President of the College of Charleston; Dean and Simon S. Selig, Jr. Chair of Economic Growth at the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia; Dean of the Rutgers Business School; Director of the Operations Management Center at the University of Minnesota; and Professor of Decision Sciences at the University of Minnesota.  As he looks ahead to the future, Dr. Benson intends to continue teaching, serving on corporate and nonprofit boards including the Foundation for the Baldrige Award, and mentoring students, alumni, and friends.
