Kalle Lyytinen, Distinguished University Professor, Iris S. Wolstein Professor of Management Design at Case Western Reserve University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Education for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education.
Passionate about sharing his knowledge with others, Dr. Lyytinen has excelled as a computer scientist, educator and management scholar. In preparation for his career, he matriculated at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1976, a Master of Science in 1977 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1986. Later in his career, Dr. Lyytinen earned Doctor of Philosophy degree (h.c) from Umea University of Sweden in 2008, the Doctor of Business Administration (h.c.) from Copenhagen Business School in 2016 and Doctor of Engineering (h.c.) from Lappeenranta University of Technology in 2017.
Dr. Lyytinen entered his profession by circumstance. After he graduated from college, he was not sure of his career path but undertook the role of an educator and found he immensely enjoyed teaching. He has been a researcher for institutions such as the University of Stockholm, the University of Jyväskylä and the London School of Economics between the years 1981 and 1986. Dr. Lyytinen became the department head and professor of department of computer science and information systems at the University of Jyväskylä from 1987 and 2001, also has held various positions during this time. He taught as a professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 1993 to 1994 before spending time at Georgia State University as a G.E. Smith visiting professor in 1997 and as dean of the School of Information Technology at the University of Jyvaskyla from 1998 to 2000. Dr. Lyytinen has been appointed as a professor at Case Western Reserve University since 2001 and was appointed to distinguished university professor at 2017 (the highest honor a faculty can be bestowed at Case Western Reserve University).
Dr. Lyytinen has been associated with various professional organizations, including the International Federation Information Processing during the 1990s. He currently holds memberships with the Academy of Management, the Association of the Conquering Machinery (ACM), the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, (INFORMS) and the Association of Information Systems (AIS, honorary member). In addition to these endeavors, Dr. Lyytinen served in the infantry of the Finnish Army from 1972 from 1973. He has been presented the Medal of 1st Class Knight, Order of the White Rose of Finland in recognition of his service. He has also been lauded with the Leo Award in 2016, has been named an AIS Fellow in 2004 and was awarded the IFIP Silver Core in 1998. Dr. Lyytinen has contributed numerous articles to professional journals and sees himself continuing in his profession and as a further testament to his notoriety, he has been featured in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in the World.
