Location: Lusby, Maryland, United States
Culver S. Ladd, PhD, MA, former secondary school teacher, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia.
Dr. Ladd’s journey as an educator has been a wonderful and impactful one that had an unlikely beginning. After serving in the United States Air Force in Asia as a captain, he became extremely involved in his Presbyterian church where he met many personal mentors who helped shape the next phase of his career. Meanwhile, more than 8,000 miles from his home state of Maryland, there were schools in Thailand in need of teachers to educate young students during a period when the country was developing out if its primitive colonial state. Dr. Ladd took the opportunity to teach American History there, where he not only fell in love with teaching, but he was also able to impact the economic development of Thailand. To date, the experience is still the highlight of Dr. Ladd’s career. Upon returning to the United States, he taught in public school systems across Washington DC, including those in areas where students were at-risk and in others for some of the best schools in the region. At the same time, Dr. Ladd pursued educational research as his former experiences in Thailand fueled him to want to return to the area and further enhance the academic resources available.
In 1974, Dr. Ladd became involved with the establishment of a college in Thailand, which has since grown to a major university with more than 6,000 students. Payan University is located in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where Dr. Ladd is known to have returned on several occasions to teach as a special lecturer. In recognition of his professional excellence in his career, he was the recipient of an Appreciation Award from the university. In addition, he received an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Though now retired, Dr. Ladd continues in his work. In March 2019, he participated as a senior member of the social studies council at an educational conference of the middle states. His longevity in his field has allowed him to serve as an expert in many areas of academics and educational research.
When asked of his success, Dr. Ladd attributes his accomplishments to the influence of his great mentors and the education that provided him with the knowledge to be driven and informed. He holds a PhD and two Masters of Arts from American University, a postgraduate certificate from Harvard University, and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland. Committed to his professional development, Dr. Ladd has been involved in several industry organizations throughout his career, including the American University Education and Training Research Institute, the Middle States Council of Social Studies, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Capital Area Political Science Association, and the Mid-Atlantic Region Association of Asian Studies. As he looks to the future, Dr. Ladd intends to enjoy his retirement while continuing to contribute to the field of education nationally and abroad.
