Derick Balnave, DSc, Agricultural Studies Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in agricultural education.
Inspired while conducting research during his graduate studies, Dr. Balnave chose education as a career choice. Originally from Ireland, he earned a BSc, PhD and later a DSc from Queen’s University in 1963, 1966 and 1983 respectively. Prior to relocating to Australia in 1977, he worked as a principal science officer for the Department of Agriculture in Ireland and as a lecturer at his alma mater. He became senior lecturer and then associate professor at the University of Sydney. He continued his work with the institution until retiring in 2001.
In addition to these roles, Dr. Balnave served as an adjunct professor at North Carolina State University from 1995 to 2005 and was a member of the working party for the Agricultural Research Council in England from 1970 to 1977. He also became an expert advisor for the institution in 1974. His expertise has been called upon with the poultry research foundation at the University of Sydney, where he served as the research director from 1978 until 2001. He has been an honorary governor for the institution ever since. Furthermore, Dr. Balnave was the chair of the organizing committee for the Australian Poultry Science Symposium from 1988 to 2001.
In order to stay abreast of trends and recent developments within the field, Dr. Balnave was a member of the Poultry Science Association Inc. and the World’s Poultry Science Association. He received the Australian Poultry Award in 1998 from the institution. In his career, Dr. Balnave contributed to numerous articles and professional journals. While he is retired, Dr. Balnave still enjoys research. However, his research in recent years has been focused on his family genealogy. This research has also expanded into Scottish history and he has published a book on his family’s history.
