Mary Joan M. Thomsen, Psychology Educator at Los Angeles Pierce College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in psychology education.

A retired professor of psychology at the Los Angeles Community College District since 1999, Ms. Thomsen has since been serving as a part-time psychology educator at the Los Angeles Pierce College. Prior to her retirement, she served Los Angeles Community College District as a professor for 35 fruitful years, where the highlights of her career were being told she had a positive influence on the lives of her students, who then went on to create successful lives for themselves. Ms. Thomsen commenced her career as an information operator at the Pacific Bell Telephone Company in 1951, going on to serve the Los Angeles County Library System as a library clerk for the following two years. While pursuing her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of California, Los Angeles, she was a research assistant and a reader in the department of psychology between 1955 and 1958. Additionally, she was a social psychology intern at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Hospital in 1959. Subsequent to obtaining her master’s degree, Ms. Thomsen served the Boeing Company as a human factors analyst in 1960 and the Los Angeles Adult Schools as an evening school clerk from 1962 to 1964. During this time, she began her illustrious career as a professor of psychology.

Ms. Thomsen holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in pre-medicine and psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, which she obtained in 1955 and 1960, respectively. A member of the Pierce Faculty Association, she has also sat on the Arts Council for California State University, Northridge. In light of her outstanding contributions to her industry, Ms. Thomsen was named Teacher of the Year by Los Angeles Pierce College and was listed in the 63rd edition of Who’s Who in America, as well as multiple editions of Who’s Who of American Women. The proud mother of her daughter Cynthia Leuba and two grandchildren, she enjoys traveling, art, music, reading and gardening in her spare time.
