In 2018, Dr. Gibson commenced her tenure at Northern Illinois University, as an assistant professor in the department of leadership, educational psychology and foundations within the College of Education. Teaching courses in educational administration, she has more than 40 years of dedicated experience in academia. At the inception of her career, she served the Harlem School District of Loves Park and Machesney Park as a high school teacher of computer science, business and mathematics, teaching there for 14 years. She later went on to serve such institutions as Wabaunsee Community College as an instructor and the Regional Learning Center in Rockford, IL, as a supervisor.
However, the crowning highlight of her career was her tenure at the Hononegah Community School District, where she served as superintendent from 2012 to 2018. During her tenure at Hononegah, Dr. Gibson overcame several obstacles, including a severe flood, a minor fire and a collapsed dome that covered the area of the former athletic facility. Nevertheless, under her leadership, the district increased its number of advanced placement classes, received advanced accreditation, and approved a referendum to construct a state-of-the-art athletic fieldhouse, which is scheduled to open in fall 2019. Dr. Gibson is most renowned for holding the honor of the highest test scores in the region, as well as being one of the top school districts in Illinois and the nation. An educator at heart, she has always valued the role of education in young individuals’ lives and felt that going into the academic field was her calling in life.
To prepare for her career, Dr. Gibson attended Northern Illinois University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in business education in 1979. After gaining prominence in her field, she returned to the university and received a Master of Science in educational administration in 1992, and Specialist in Education and Doctor of Education in 2013. She is a certified teacher, administrator and superintendent in the state of Illinois. Throughout her tenure, she has dedicated her time to various professional organizations and volunteer opportunities, such as Fresh Beginnings, the Rockford Chamber of Commerce, the Belvidere Chamber of Commerce, the Greenwich Art Fair, the Loves Park Chamber of Commerce and Phi Delta Kappa.
As a testament to her success, Dr. Gibson has accrued multiple educational and professional awards, including a feature in the fourth edition of Who’s Who in American Education. However, she cites the crowning achievement of her career was raising her children: Mark, Chelsey, Taylor, Jiaping, Chloe and Bryn. Chelsey holds a degree in nursing and is employed as a nurse in Rockford, while Mark holds a degree in engineering and works in Madison, IL. Bryn recently graduated from Northern Illinois University and is considering attending law school, and Taylor is working towards a master’s degree in speech-language pathology, also at Northern Illinois University. Dr. Gibson’s daughter Chloe earned a degree from the department of world languages and cultures at Northern Illinois University and is currently teaching at Rock Valley College. Jiaping, the family’s adopted child from China, is in a pre-dental track at St. Olaf College. Dr. Gibson and her husband Mike also have five Huskies in their family.
