Don S. Miyada, PhD, chemist, consultant and professor emeritus, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in clinical chemistry.
Highly regarded in his field for his honesty and his desire to share his knowledge with his students, Dr. Miyada celebrates a career that spanned 47 years before retiring in 1991. He began his career with the U.S. Army in 1944, where he served as a sergeant and part of the European Theater of Operations for two years. Upon completing his military service, he pursued his education, which includes a Bachelor of Science from the University of California, which he earned in 1949 and a PhD from Michigan State University in 1953.
Driven to the field of clinical chemistry as influenced by a book he read during his studies that emphasized the importance of scientists on society, Dr. Miyada came to prominence in early roles as a postdoctoral fellow for two major university laboratories. First for the chemistry laboratory at the Ohio State University from 1955 to 1956 and then for the McArdle Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1956 to 1957. Thereafter, Dr. Miyada’s career took off, which afforded him the opportunities to serve as an assistant research biochemist for the University of California, a research biochemist for the Long Beach Veterans Affairs Hospital and a clinical biochemist for Biochemistry Procedures, Inc. At the same time, Dr. Miyada served as an associate adjunct professor for the University of California Irvine. He taught there for 22 years and achieved progressive titles all the way through to professor emeritus upon his retirement.
In recognition of his professional excellence, Dr. Miyada was the recipient of a Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement Award. However, when asked of the highlight of his career, he notes that being named “Favorite Professor” by his former students was his greatest shining achievement. He has shared his expert insight to members of his industry by contributing articles to professional journals in his field. Distinguished as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Miyada remained at the top of his field through his involvement with industry organizations, including the American Chemical Society, the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, and Optimists International. As he looks ahead to the future, Dr. Miyada intends to continue enjoying his retirement while taking on passion projects that pique his interest.
