Donna Smoot, Director of Bands at USD #442 School District, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music.

With more than 50 years of professional experience, Ms. Smoot has been the director of bands at USD #442 School District since 2002, having been and instrumental music teacher with the district since 1993. Prior to obtaining these roles, she was an instrumental and vocal teacher with Mexico School District from 1990 to 1992, and with USD #442 School District from 1980 to 1990. From 1971 to 1974, she was an instrumental teacher with Laramie County School District, and from 1968 to 1971 she was a music teacher with Poudre R #1 School District. Earlier in her career, Ms. Smoot was a music teacher with West Burlington School District from 1966 to 1968.

Ms. Smoot began her career as a student at Iowa Wesleyan College, where she obtained a Bachelor of Music in music education in 1966. She was originally a piano major and decided that since she wanted to study music but did not want to become a professional pianist, she would focus her efforts on music education.  She continued her education with Wichita State University, earning a Master of Arts in music education in 1986. She has been certified as a teacher by the Kansas State Department of Education.

The highlight of Ms. Smoot’s career was being assistant director of a band and directing one of the numbers for the National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. She felt that any band that gets the opportunity to perform at the National Cemetery should do it. A respected voice in her areas of interest, Ms. Smoot has been an active leader in her community. She is a member of the National Education Association, the Music Education National Conference, the Kansas Bandmaster Association, and Phi Beta Mu. Throughout her career, she has been recognized for her contributions, having received the Blue Key from Iowa Wesleyan College. Ms. Smoot has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who’s Who of American Women, and has earned the coveted Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
