Elisha Richardson, dean of dentistry at Meharry Medical College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in dentistry.
With more than 55 years of professional experience, Dr. Richardson has been dean of the school of dentistry at Meharry Medical College since 1988. Prior to obtaining his current role, he was a professor and chair of orthodontics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center from 1985 to 1988, and he previously held a number of positions with Meharry Medical College, including associate dean and professor of dentistry from 1976 to 1985, associate professor from 1967 to 1976, and assistant professor from 1962 to 1967.
Dr. Richardson began his career as a student at Southern University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1951. He then joined Meharry Medical College, completing a Doctor of Dental Science in 1955. He continued his studies with the University of Illinois, receiving a Master of Science in 1963. Dr. Richardson also holds a PhD in human growth and development from the University of Michigan.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Richardson has been an active leader in his community. A fellow of the American College of Dentists and a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, he is a member of the National Dental Association, the Capital City Dental Society, the Pan-Tennessee Dental Association, the American Association of Dental Schools, and the International Association of Dental Research. He has also been affiliated with the Angle Society of Orthodontics, the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Dental Association, and the Craniofacial Biology Group.
Throughout his career, Dr. Richardson has been recognized for his contributions. Meharry Medical college named him an Outstanding Sophomore Dental Student and Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year, and Ebony Magazine named him among the 100 Most Influential Blacks in the United States. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who’s Who in America.
