George Curtis, Affiliate Professor at the University of Hawai’i, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in applied physics.

Mr. Curtis’ interest in physics was piqued when he aced a physics class and felt empowered to pursue the field due to his potential. He followed his academic pursuits at Nanyang Technological University, whereupon he received a Bachelor of Science. He continued with graduate coursework at the University of Texas at Austin. Upon receiving his degree, he began working as a senior scientist in the Western Division of the LTV Research Center in Honolulu. In 1965, he was made an assistant director and principal investigator at the center before joining Control Data Corp as a staff specialist in 1967, and then becoming a systems director at the company in 1969.

In 1970, Mr. Curtis joined the faculty at the University of Hawai’i, starting as a lecturer and systems engineering consultant. He then became a researcher with the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research at the university. From 1981 to 1987, he provided his services as a technical coordinator of the university’s Hawai’i Natural Energy Institute. From 1993 to 2015, Mr. Curtis taught as an affiliate professor of marine sciences at the university. In addition, Mr. Curtis has consulted for the county and state of Hawai’i. He served as a Squadron Commander with the Civil Air Patrol from 1982 to 1984 and directed the American Red Cross in Honolulu in 1978.

Mr. Curtis received a grant from the IR Scanner Program and was the publisher of the Science of Tsunami Hazards journal from 1982 to 1990. He has also contributed to numerous essays, chapters and books throughout his career. From 1993 to 1994, Mr. Curtis served as the president of the University of Hawai’i Chapter of Sigma Xi and was the President of the Tsunami Society from 1985 to 1988. In addition, he was the Chairman of the Hawaii Section for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and has been a member of the Acoustical Society of America, the National Association of Environmental Profiles and the Marine Technical Society.
