Harry Chow Wong, MD, Anesthesiologist and Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in anesthesiology.
Highly regarded in the medical community for his contributions to clinical and academic anesthesiology, Dr. Wong celebrates an illustrious career that began in 1961. Retired since 1995, he spent 28 years in private practice as an anesthesiologist while also serving as a clinical faculty member for the University of Utah School of Medicine. Throughout his tenure, he was active and served in many professional organizations, including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Ambulatory Surgery, the Joint Commission Accreditation Health Organization, various Ambulatory Surgical Centers, the Utah Medical Association, the Utah Physician Licensing Board and the Utah Medical Insurance Association. His professional career was divided in three phases, first, cardiac surgery anesthesia, second, ambulatory anesthesia and third, professor and clinical director of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Utah.
When asked of his success in his career, Dr. Wong notes that he was always driven to take on new challenges in order to find new solutions. In an effort to contain costs and improve delivery of surgical care, Dr. Wong co-founded the Salt Lake Surgical Center, the first ambulatory surgical facility in Utah in 1975. He was active in helping develop policies, procedures, standards and quality of care for surgical centers through the professional organizations to which he belonged. For 13 years, Dr. Wong served as president of the medical staff at Salt Lake Surgical Center and its success produced recognition of national prominence.
Dr. Wong is a longstanding member of multiple professional organizations, which allowed him to share his insights and expertise across his industry. He served on the board of directors, chaired several committees including quality of care, peer review, patient safety, and ambulatory surgery for the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He was also a charter member and served on the board of directors for the Federated Ambulatory Surgical Association and the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia. In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession, Dr. Wong was the recipient of an Albert Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as a Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement Award. In the years to come, Dr. Wong intends to continue enjoying his well deserved retirement.
