Patricia Newsome, Retired Elementary School Educator at Muscogee County School District, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in elementary education.
Mrs. Newsome became involved in education when she returned home after her sophomore year of college and was asked to work in the Bible School. She had previously been frustrated with her experiences working in music, and found that she liked working with children much better, so she changed her major and focused on education. In her career, she was instrumental in helping students develop their reading skills. She considers the highlight of her career to be her work between 1968 and 1977, when she was tasked with helping out with one of the only individualized reading programs in the city. In this venture, she was able to help many students progress immensely with their reading skills and comprehension.
In 1961, Mrs. Newsome earned a Bachelor of Science in education from Auburn University and later returned to her own academic pursuits to receive a Master of Education from Georgia State University in 1974. In 1968, she joined the faculty at Muscogee County School District as an elementary school educator. She remained at the school until her retirement in 1999. She remains connected to the education community as the chairman of the Muscogee Retired Educators Association. In addition, she has maintained professional affiliation with such organizations as Alpha Delta Kappa, Muscogee County Council IRA, United Methodist Women, Meals on Wheels, Georgia Science Teachers Association and the Georgia Retired Educators Association.
In the 1987 to 1988 school year, Mrs. Newsome was selected as the Reading Teacher of the Year in Muscogee County. On a civic level, she has provided her time and dedication as the President of the Free Spirits-Senior Adults with St. Luke United Methodist Church, as a tutor for Our House and on the board of directors of the Second Harvest Food Bank. Furthermore, she has served on the board of director of the Older Adult Council with the St. Luke Methodist Church and as a delegate for the South Georgia United Methodist Conference.
