Denise Marie O’Gorman-Nowak, MEd, Secondary School Educator and Counseling Administrator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in environmental science education and college counseling.

Ms. O’Gorman-Nowak experienced a lot of hardship during her junior year of high school and helping her through that tough time were two teachers in the twilight of their careers, Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Tuscano. Their guidance inspired her to emulate them, and become a similar role model for future generations of students. She pursued this dream by first earning a Bachelor of Science in education from Manhattan College in 1991 and then a Master of Arts in science education at New York University in 1995. She later received a MEd in school counseling from North Carolina State University in 2003.

Since 2003, Ms. O’Gorman-Nowak has been a biology and AP environmental science teacher at The Woods Charter School. She previously taught biology in New York City between 1991 and 1997. From 2001 to 2004, she served as the president of the Pittsboro Montessori Preschool. Additionally, Ms. O’Gorman-Nowak has written curriculum and lessons for the Institute for the Environment at the University of North Carolina. Throughout her career as an educator, she has been an instrumental figure in many of her students’ lives. She considers the help she has been able to provide for them as highlights of her career. When she first started teaching, she had two students who were hard of hearing but were afraid to wear hearing aids since the other students would pick on them. One of these students confided in her that he couldn’t hear her when she faced the chalkboard. Since then, Ms. O’Gorman-Nowak made sure to always address the class facing them which made an improvement in the education of these students. Another career highlight includes having a student who was having a personal crisis at home and being able to help that student as her mentors, Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Tuscano, had helped her.

In addition to these achievements, Ms. O’Gorman-Nowak has maintained professional affiliation as a Climate Fellow and as an Energy Leadership Fellow at the Institute for the Environment with the University of North Carolina. She is the recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and has been featured among Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in American Women and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders. Looking toward the future, she endeavors to continue developing professionally and teaching.
