With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Heldreth has been a professor at Northern Michigan University since 1981. Prior to obtaining his current position, he was an associate professor at the school from 1976 to 1981, an assistant professor from 1973 to 1976, and an instructor from 1970 to 1973. Earlier in his career, he was an abstractor and editor with the National Council of Teacher of English Eric Clearing House from 1968 to 1970.

In addition to his primary roles, Dr. Heldreth held a number of leadership positions with Northern Michigan University. From 2000 to 2005, he was associate provost of academic affairs, from 1999 to 2000 he was interim associate vice president of academy administration, and from 1998 to 2000 he was assistant vice president of undergraduate affairs. He previously served as associate dean from 1994 to 1999, head of English from 1988 to 1998, and interim dean of arts and sciences from 1991 to 1992. Dr. Heldreth’s love of science, reading, and writing prompted him to pursue his profession. All of these elements still tie together and carry over into his creative works.

Dr. Heldreth began his career as a student at West Virginia University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1962. He continued his studies with the school, completing a Master of Arts in English in 1964. He later joined the University of Illinois, earning a PhD in English in 1973. The highlight of Dr. Heldreth’s career is staying with the same institution for 35 years. His entire career was spent at Northern Michigan University. Dr. Heldreth is most proud of balancing the teaching with the administrative and not losing one or the other. In his career, Dr. Heldreth received a Distinguished Faculty Award from the Northern Michigan University, as well as research grants.
