Mr. Shelly began his career as a student at Sam Houston State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in agriculture with a minor in criminology and corrections in 1977. He continued his studies with the school, earning a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology with a minor in physics in chemistry in 1985. He is a certified teacher by the Texas Education Agency. Mr. Shelly became involved in his profession because he worked for the prison system and there was a young inmate that he spent about an hour listening to one night and could sense that he was very distraught. After listening to him for quite some time he thought the inmate was doing well but later found out that he committed suicide. That spurred Mr. Shelly to leave the prison system and start working with kids before they got their lives messed up and end up in prison. It was a life-changing event for him and that’s the reason he started coaching.
