Title: Academic Administrator (Retired)
Location: Apalachin, New York, United States
Mary A. Swain, Former Academic Administrator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education.
With expertise in clinical work, Dr. Swain found success in her career by creating her own path. After obtaining a Master of Arts and a PhD in psychology from the University of Michigan in 1964 and 1969, she felt compelled to take a holistic “mind and body” approach to the field of psychology. She notes that this was unlike anything that anyone else in her field had been doing at the time. Dr. Swain is highly regarded for her work in prominent roles with her alma mater, the University of Michigan, which included interim vice president of student services, interim co-director of personnel, interim director of affirmative action, associate vice president of academic affairs, chairman of the department of nursing research, and director of the school nursing doctoral program. She concluded her career in 2010 as provost and vice president of academic affairs for the State University of New York, Binghamton, a role that she held for 13 years.
Notably in her career, Dr. Swain directed the effort to create a PhD program in nursing at the University of Michigan, as well as designing the structure for the College of Community and Public Affairs at Binghamton. These acts of academic trailblazing are great points of pride for her. In recognition of her outstanding contribution to her field, she was the recipient of a Woman of Distinction Award and she was distinguished by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship. As she looks to the future, Dr. Swain intends to enjoy her retirement by indulging in projects surrounding her favorite topic: the history of the Civil War.
