Mary Butts, Nursing Educator, Administrator and Financial Aid Officer at Franklin County Vocational Technical School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nursing education.
Encouraged to enter the health care profession by her sister, who worked in the medical industry, Ms. Butts received a diploma in nursing from Washington County Hospital in 1955. Soon thereafter, she began working as an instructor at the Washington Health System School of Nursing for five years. Beginning in 1960, she subsequently served as an instructor in the Practical Nurse Program at Franklin County Vocational Technical School until 1975. During this time, she pursued further education at Shippensburg University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in education and Master of Education in 1964 and 1957, respectively. From 1975 until her retirement from the industry in 2000, she served as an administrator and financial aid officer of the Practical Nurse Program with the technical school.
Completing additional coursework at the University of Maryland and Penn State University, Ms. Butts also contributed her time to her community as treasurer and secretary of the Franklin County Democratic Women’s Club. She also volunteered with the American Diabetes Association, the Democratic Committee of Women and the Pennsylvania Parent Teacher Association.
Distinguished in her profession by her innate desire to help students on a universal scale, Ms. Butts has also maintained affiliation with numerous organizations to remain abreast of developments in the field. She is a member of the National League for Nursing, the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, the Association for Practical Nursing, the American Red Cross and the Pennsylvania Vocational Association. In light of her interest in genealogy, she also remains active with the Kittochtinny Historical Society.
