Emmanuel Y. Lartey, PhD, Professor of Pastoral Theology at Emory University/Candler School of Theology, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in emotional and spiritual care of people.
Dr. Lartey became involved in his profession because of his research area. He is an ordained minister of the church, so he got involved in the interface of religion and the care of persons largely out of his interest in psychology and religion. He became an ordained minister in 1981 and in his service has seen the important faith has in the wellbeing of a person. Dr. Lartey first earned bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Ghana in 1978. He relocated to the United Kingdom, whereupon he received a PhD in religion and health from the University of Birmingham in 1984. In 2018, he received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from the University of Pretoria.
Upon working as a professor of pastoral theology at the Candler School of Theology with Emory University, Dr. Lartey encounters many people in all walks of life striving for greater meaning through faith. He teaches regularly, courses in pastoral care, counseling, and regularly supervises research students. Furthermore, he advises doctoral students doing research in intercultural pastoral care and counseling. Pastoral care is the care of a person in a holistic sense, concerning the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual health.
Throughout the duration of his career, he considers one of his most important achievements largely to be researching the mental health field in Ghana, West Africa and then in the United Kingdom. He has been involved in researching the mental well being and the care of persons with mental health challenges. Recognizing the highlights is recognizing religion and questions of faith and meaning play a large role in people’s everyday lives. Looking toward the future, Dr. Lartey intends on continuing producing scholarships that will inspire and encourage. In his career, he has maintained professional affiliation with the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.
