Title: Theater Educator

Location: Tempe, Arizona, United States

Lyn Dutson, Theater Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in dramatic arts.

Ms. Dutson became involved in her profession partly because of her own high school play director, Richard Hutchinson. She greatly admired his patience and ability to teach. Somehow theater, costumes, the history and directing all came together, which further sparked her interest. She enjoyed directing and has worked with over 50 people. From 1969 until her retirement in 2009, Ms. Dutson taught at Mesa Community College. In 2010, she received the honorary professor emeritus title. Prior to working at MCC, she lectured at Arizona State University. The highlight of Ms. Dutson’s career was being nominated by MCC and being inducted into the Hall of Fame as one of the faculty members.

Ms. Dutson earned a Bachelor of Arts from Arizona State University in 1966 and continued at the institution to receive a Master of Arts in 1967. In 2009, she became a Black Belt with the Arizona Chuan Fa Society and in 2017, became a Black Belt in Goju Shorei Weapons System. In addition to being a faculty member and lecturer, Ms. Dutson has directed several plays as well as participated in the costume design for these plays. She has also served as an actor and combatant with the American Fight Directors. In her career, she has maintained professional affiliation with the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, the Costume Society of America, the Smithsonian Associates, the Southern Poverty Law Center, Common Cause and the American Civil Liberties Union. In addition to her Faculty Service Award presented to her by MCC in 2007, she received an Arizona Award in 2000 and an Arizona Theatre Alliance Award in 2000.
