Gary Lounsberry, Professor Emeritus and Public Health Official at Alfred State College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in mental and social health.
Dr. Lounsberry got into his profession because he wanted to help people. He volunteered during his undergraduate studies at the VA Hospital in Canandaigua, New York, particularly with the mentally ill and found a calling to this profession. What ensued is a career filled with more than five decades of accomplishments. In 2014, he received the professor emeritus title upon his retirement at Alfred State College. He had been with the school since 2005 as a professor of social and behavioral sciences. Prior to that, he taught and lead departments at Florida Gulf Coast University, the United States Public Health Service and the Family Health Centers of Southwest Florida.
Knowing the importance of education, Dr. Lounsberry first earned an AB from the University of Rochester in 1966 and continued at the University of Michigan to receive an MSW in 1968. He returned to his studies to earn an MPH at the University of Pittsburgh in 1981 and a PhD in social work research, policy and analysis at the University of Pittsburgh in 1985. He is a licensed specialist in clinical social work in Kansas and Florida. From 1970 to 1996, Dr. Lounsberry was a Captain of the Commissioned Corps. with the US Public Health Service. Notably, he is a founding faculty member of the College of Professional Studies at Florida Gulf Coast University and a developing faculty member for the bachelor’s of human services management at Alfred State College.
In 2013, Dr. Lounsberry was recognized as the Social Workers of the Year by the American Public Health Association. In his career, he has chaired the Lawrence Area Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers and maintained professional affiliation with the American Orthopsychiatric Association, the American Public Health Association, the Academy of Certified Social Workers and the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback. Furthermore, he has been involved with the Commissioned Officers Association with the US Public Health Service.
