Inspired by his father who served as a minister, Dr. Houston grew up with the desire to live a life of public service and leadership. Knowing he would make an exceptional educator, he earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Teaching from Ohio State University, respectively, before earning a Certification in Advanced Study and a Doctor of Education from Harvard University. He has served as a teacher at Chapel Hill City Schools in North Carolina before assuming the role of principal at Summit City Schools in New Jersey. Dr. Houston then worked as an assistant superintendent for Birmingham County Schools in Alabama, subsequently serving as a superintendent for Princeton Regional Schools, Tucson Unified School District and Riverside Unified Schools. In 1994, he assumed the role of executive director for the American Association of School Administrators, a role he held until his appointment as president of the Center of Empowered Leadership in 2008.
The Center of Empowered Leadership strives to empower leaders and provide consultants to help solve issues in the public and private sectors. Dr. Houston is dedicated to shaping the future of education and works tirelessly to create a better world for students. He considers a career highlight to be when one of his daughters explained Dr. Houston’s job to her friends, saying he “goes into organizations that are having problems and makes them well.” Dr. Houston loves helping organizations improve and become sustainable as well as the mentorship he is able to provide. In recognition of his success Dr. Houston has been awarded the prestigious Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement and has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest and Who’s Who in the West.
