Sharon Stovall Benson, Retired Teacher at Congregational Preschool, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in elementary education.

Inspired to delve into the field of teaching by her parents, who were teachers and academic administrators, Ms. Benson commenced her career as a kindergarten aide in Albuquerque Public Schools from 1976 to 1978. After taking time off from her profession, she returned to teaching in 1987 as a teacher at the La Mesa Elementary School in Albuquerque, NM, holding the role for one year. Thereafter, she served in her most recent position as a teacher at the Congregational Preschool in Albuquerque, a position she held from 1991 until her retirement in 2006. Alongside her primary endeavors, Ms. Benson was a parent representative at the South Atlantic Regional Resource Center in Florida from 1986 to 1987 and was a former secretary of the board of the Albuquerque Special Preschool in 1975.

Earning a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in elementary education from the University of New Mexico in 1968 and 1980, respectively, Ms. Benson is a certified teacher in New Mexico. In an effort to remain abreast of developments in her profession, she maintains affiliation with Parents Reaching Out, the New Mexico Association for the Education of Young Children, Pi Lambda Theta and the Arc of the United States, where she previously acted as a trained elevator from 1988 to 1990.

Enjoying bell choir, volunteering in programs for the disabled, and practicing Zumba, Ms. Benson has been featured in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who of American Women in recognition of her exemplary work in education. Married to Professor Merle John Benson, she has two children and two grandchildren.
