Connie Gabel, PhD, Instructor at Metropolitan State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in science education.
Dr. Gabel entered her profession because she had a high school science teacher and a high school math teacher who inspired her to teach those subjects. She began her own education in 1969, where she served as a teaching assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for a year. She specialized in endocrinology and then spent two years teaching in Tokyo, Japan. Over the next several decades, she taught and spent time in educational administrative positions. These include being a Dean of Students at Horizon High School and a Project 2061 Coordinator at the Department of Chemistry/Education at the University of Colorado. Prior to retiring, Dr. Gabel was an instructor at Metropolitan State University in education and chemistry, holding this position from 2004 to 2016.
Dr. Gabel first earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from James Madison University. She continued at the University of Colorado, receiving a Master of Arts in educational administration summa cum laude in 1984. Continuously committed to her own journey in education, she received a PhD in educational leadership and innovation at the University of Colorado in 2001. The highlight of Dr. Gabel’s career was acting as the chair of the American Chemical Society for the state of Colorado for the local Colorado section. In addition, because of her math skills, she was asked to do work on the Colorado State finances. Dr. Gabel did the statistical work and worked on figuring out how to construct better laws on the books about Colorado school finance. In addition, she initiated a program for crime stoppers at the high school level. Dr. Gabel also did a supplemental instruction program on how to make that work in chemistry at Metropolitan State University of Denver.
