Herman Berliner, Ph.D., Dean at Hofstra University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in economics, higher education and academic administration.
Interested in economics from a formative age, Dr. Berliner desired to work on a university campus, believing that it would be a wonderful place to continuously learn and evolve due to the great minds that exist in a collegiate environment. Employed with Hofstra University for nearly 50 years, he commenced his illustrious career as an assistant professor of economics in 1970, holding the role for 15 years. During this time, he also served as the associate dean of advisement for one year and associate provost for seven years. The former dean of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business from 1980 to 1989, he served as a professor of economics from 1985 to 1996 while simultaneously acting as the provost and dean of faculties for more than a decade. Since 1996, he has earned the title of Lawrence Herbert distinguished professor. In addition, he has been serving as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs since January 2019.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Berliner pursued formal education at the City College of New York, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in 1965 and 1970, respectively. A contributor of articles to the Dean and Provost Journal and ESMD Global Magazine, he formerly served the North Shore School District in multiple capacities, including as a board member, vice president and president. Likewise, he sat on the board of directors and served as director for ProjectGrad from 2005 to 2014, and he has been sitting on the board of directors of New 42nd Street since 2014.
Among the highlights of his career, Dr. Berliner cites becoming dean to be one of his crowning achievements. Noting that the occupation provided him with opportunities in terms of leadership, he is also proud of serving as provost for more than two decades, which is a substantial feat in the academic realm. He has thoroughly enjoyed his stay at Hofstra University and intends to transition from administration back to teaching in the near future.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Berliner had a building on the Hofstra campus named in his honor in 2012, and the university presented him with an Honorary Alumni Award. The recipient of the Lisnet Award in 2015, he also notably maintains fellowship with the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America/College Retirement Equities Fund. Hofstra University further gave him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his contributions to the university.
Married to Annette Schrader with two children, Isabel and Julia, Dr. Berliner enjoys watching Broadway musicals in his spare time. He has been highlighted in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America. Impressively, he was honored with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
