Denise Lynne Montgomery, Retired Associate Professor at Valdosta State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in library science and higher education.

With 35 years of professional experience, Ms. Montgomery is a prominent librarian and educator who most recently served as an associate professor and the head of interlibrary loans at Valdosta State University in Georgia, roles she held from 1984 until her retirement from the industry in 2018. Commencing her illustrious career in the readers’ services library at St. Leo University in Florida in 1983, she delved into her profession as a result of a career aptitude test, which informed her that librarianship would be the most ideal career choice based on her personality. While studying toward her bachelor’s degree at Sweet Briar College, she worked as a student assistant in the library, which solidified her decision to dive into library science.

Ms. Montgomery holds a Bachelor of Arts from Sweet Briar College and a Master of Science in library science from Florida State University, which she obtained in 1975 and 1981, respectively. A contributor of myriad articles to professional journals, she contributed to “Royal Visits and War Brides to Britain and the Americas: Culture, Politics and History” in 2015, and served as a senior research editor for the “Yale Dictionary of Quotations” in 2006 and editor of the eighth edition of “Ottemiller’s Index to Plays in Collections” in 2011. Notably, the latter title was included in the Choice Reviews’ Outstanding Academic Titles list in 2012.

Currently sitting on the STARS education committee of the American Library Association, where she previously sat on the fee-based services committee and services to adults committee, Ms. Montgomery also maintained affiliation with the Georgia Library Association, serving as chairman of the interlibrary loan roundtable. Despite all of her accomplishments, she considers the ultimate highlight of her career to have been getting a document delivery system established on the Valdosta State University campus. Delivering materials through campus mail and allowing students to collect materials at the circulation desk, Ms. Montgomery believes that developing the document delivery system was one of the best things the library has done to ensure student happiness.
