Michael M. Martin, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biology and higher education.

Interested in the sciences as an undergraduate student, Dr. Martin entered his profession at the formative stages of its development. Feeling as though he was carried along with the natural growth of the field, he has amassed 40 fruitful years in higher education. Commencing his career as a faculty member at the University of Michigan in 1959, he stayed with the university for the duration of his career. From 1970 to 1985, he served as a professor of biology and chemistry, having simultaneously acted as chairman of the division of biological sciences from 1982 to 1985. Thereafter, he served as a professor of biology from 1985 until attaining emeritus status in 1999. During this time, he also held the role of associate dean and director of the honors program in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts.

A member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the International Society of Chemical Ecology, Dr. Martin holds a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois. Subsequent to earning his doctorate, he served in a postdoctoral fellowship through the National Science Foundation. In addition, he was honored as a Sloan Foundation Fellow and a Fulbright Research Scholar later in his career, having also been a National Science Foundation Faculty Fellow in Science through the University of Michigan during his tenure.

Married to Joan Stadler since 1965, Dr. Martin is the proud father of two children, Jeffrey Thomas and Linda, and four grandchildren. He has been highlighted in the seventh edition of Who’s Who in American Education, the 25th edition of Who’s Who in the Midwest, and the 44th through 46th editions of Who’s Who in America.
