James E. Conlon, Professor Emeritus at the University of South Alabama, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in art and higher education.
Drawn to the arts from a formative age, Mr. Conlon has always been interested in artistic endeavors, particularly the teaching of artistic crafts and skills. Attending Ohio State University in his youth, he earned a Bachelor of Science in art education and Master of Arts in fine arts in 1959 and 1962, respectively. While attending graduate school, he served as an art teacher in Cincinnati Public Schools from 1960 to 1961, as well as a graduate assistant at Ohio State University from 1961 to 1962. Thereafter, he held the role of lecturer at Indiana University Bloomington from 1962 to 1965.
Since 1965, Mr. Conlon has been serving the University of South Alabama, having risen through the ranks from assistant professor of art to full professor of art until attaining emeritus status in 1998. During his tenure, he chaired an informal committee that developed the minor programs of every American study, which subsequently resulted in the Ethnic American Art Slide Library, a collection of art slides of Afro-American, Native American and Hispanic-American groups. In addition, he is renowned for his design of the Mobile Terrace Playground in the early 1970s, as well as life-sized sculptures made of fiberglass and cold cast bronze. He also developed a 14-foot tall mirrored site piece.
In his spare time, Mr. Conlon gave back to his community through Habitat for Humanity, where he sat on the board of directors from 1995 to 1997. Likewise, he maintained membership with the Watercolor and Graphic Arts Society of Mobile. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to art and education, he was a grantee of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation between 1969 and 1978. He has also been featured in the 61st through 63rd editions of Who’s Who in America.
A native of Cincinnati, OH, Mr. Conlon has been happily married to Joanne Lois Kuhns since 1959 and is the proud father of three children. In his spare time, he enjoys photography and numismatics.
